Terri’s story continued

Terri and her daughters
Last week, you heard all about Terri’s Triumph. Terri a Navy veteran faced overwhelming challenges after an emergency medical situation left her without a job and a home. For over a year, she and her young children survived in an extended-stay hotel, spending every spare dollar they had just to avoid living in their car.
Terri’s journey from a hotel room to a permanent, safe apartment is a testament to her resilience, but she didn’t navigate that path entirely alone. YOU were there every step of the way, empowering our HVAF staff members to support Terri when she needed it most.
Today, we are highlighting Lauren, the dedicated HVAF staff member whose exceptional care and attention helped turn Terri’s trials into a triumph.
Lauren has been a vital part of HVAF for eight years and currently serves as a Rapid Rehousing Coordinator. In this role, she acts as the first line of contact for veterans experiencing a housing crisis.
The Rapid Rehousing team has a twofold mission: helping homeless individuals transition off the streets into permanent housing and preventing homelessness for veterans at risk of eviction.
Because of your ongoing support, Lauren and her team can meet veterans exactly where they are, offering a personalized assessment that goes far beyond just a housing need.
For Terri, she tried everywhere to find help, and had some success with other programs in Indianapolis, but unfortunately, the program she was enrolled in lacked funding to continue helping Terri long term.
That’s when Lauren stepped in.
Thanks to the flexibility your donations provided, Lauren was able to move the family into a fully covered hotel room, lifting a massive financial burden off Terri’s shoulders.
“I will never forget that day.”

Securing a temporary hotel room was just the beginning. Lauren worked hand-in-hand with Terri to find a permanent place, demonstrating a level of personal care that deeply moved the Navy veteran.
When touring potential rental houses, Lauren refused to let Terri accept a substandard living environment just to get the process over with. Terri recalled Lauren’s firm but supportive stance during their house tours.
“Lauren would say to me: if I see something I don’t like, I am not going to allow you to just be like, yeah, I’m going to settle,” Terri shared, “and I’m so glad she didn’t let me settle.”
Your generosity allows case managers like Lauren to ensure veterans like Terri do not have to settle; she made sure Terri found a home that was truly safe and appropriate for her family.
For a mother like Terri, her children are always the top priority. Lauren understands that successful support must embrace the entire family unit.
“If a plan doesn’t work for the kids, it’s not going to work, full stop” Lauren noted.
When searching for housing, Lauren actively looked for potential barriers that might affect Terri’s children. She checked if the yards were safe for them to play in, evaluated the bedroom sizes, and considered how close the property was to good schools and transportation. By taking on these worries, Lauren allowed Terri to focus her energy on simply being a mom and securing her new IT internship through the VetWorks program.
Lauren’s dedication ultimately guided Terri to sign a lease for a beautiful, stable apartment. But getting the keys is only part of the equation. As Lauren points out, putting a roof over someone’s head is vital, but making that house a home requires extra help.
Grants often cover the rent and electric bills, but they rarely pay for the essential comforts a family needs.
Your donations give HVAF the flexibility to provide beds, furniture, and kitchen supplies.
You provide the comforts and sense of normalcy that allow veterans and their children to successfully transition into the next phase of their lives.
YOU change lives.
By supporting HVAF, you ensure that compassionate professionals like Lauren have the resources they need to serve our Hoosier Heroes. If you want to help provide essential services to veterans like Terri, make a contribution today and join a community dedicated to ENDING veteran homelessness.
